Duration: 13 days
Period: July - August
Day 1
Drive from Almaty to the Canyons of Charyn River (210 km) - 3 hours. Picnic in the Big Red Canyon. Drive to Karkara Base Camp (150 km). Accommodation in family tents. Sauna, bar. Camp (2200 m). 
Day 2
AM trek along the Karkara River Valley (foot, 13kms, 3hrs) to meadow for lunch (also possible to do it on horseback - but no hats & for experienced riders only). PM drive to Kokjar Camp (4WD, 15kms, 1hr) including several deep river crossings (hence difficult to walk). Camp near river (2900m). Trek is fully supported by horses, horsemen & camp crew including cook. Tourists require 4 season sleeping bag. Camping - Kokjar Gorge - full board. 
Day 3

AM trek up river valley to Tyouz Pass (3556m) for spectacular views of north face or Kan Tengri+other peaks. PM descend through the Tyouk Kokpak Canyon to the campsite (foot, 8hrs, grade C) - inc several river crossings. Camp near river (2900m). Camping - Tyouk Kokpak Canyon - full board

Day 4
Mid AM continue to trek down through Tuyuk Kokpak Gorge, then over Green Pass and into the Ulken Kokpak Gorge (foot, 6hrs - grade B/C - easiest day of trek, but with several river crossings). Camp near river. Camping - Ulken Kokpak Valley - full board
Day 5
AM trek up to Kokpak Pass (3050m) - a short but very steep climb - most difficult of the tour. Then descend to Ulken Kokpak River and across bridge, the 1Km climb to Iglik Pass (3350m) + optional ascent to nearby summit at 3550m. Late PM descend to Karakol Lake (foot, 8hrs, grade C) - camp near lake. Camping - Karakol Lake - full board
Day 6
 AM trek via Akkol Pass (3600m) to Akkol Lake - views of Ashutor Peak (4400m) & Pobeda (7439m) in the distance (foot, 5.5hrs, grade B/C). Camp near Akkol lake. Camping - Akkol Lake - full board
Day 7

AM trek via 2 high Passes (highest at 3700m) into Ashutor Valley (foot, grade C, 7hrs) - camp near river or possibly in side valley near glaciers (extra 45mins walk). Camping - Ashutor Gorge - full board

Day 8 Last day of trek - AM trek up to Ashutor Pass (3900m) then down into Sary Dhas Valley (foot, 3.5hrs, grade B/C). Camp near confluence of 2 rivers. Camping - Sary Dhas Valley - full board
Day 9 AM helicopter arrives from Karkara (weather permitting) and lands near camp + helicopter flight to South Inylchek Glacier (helicopter, 20mins) - flight is mostly at 4800m - superb views of highest peaks. Land on glacier and disembark (helicopter can only land for 5mins at this altitude (4000m)). PM free on glacier to acclimatize. Accommodation is in fixed tents with toilet/washing & dining blocks. Camping - South Inylchek Glacier - full board
Day 10  Full day on glacier with walks across glacier towards the foot of Mt Kan Tengri (6995m) - length of walks will depend on weather conditions. Early in the season when there is still snow on the ground this may be too dangerous. Camping - South Inylchek Glacier - full board
Day 11 Another full day on the glacier. AM walks towards the icefall at the base of Mt Pobeda (7439m) - again will be weather dependent. Camping - South Inylchek Glacier - full board
Day 12

AM fly to Karkara Base camp (helicopter, 40mins). PM free in Karkara - relax at Base camp or optional walks or horseriding. Camping - Karkara Base Camp - full board

Day 13 Drive to Almaty (bus, 220kms, 7hrs).

WHAT TO BRING:

We recommend you to bring the following stuff:
  • Comfortable sport clothes and shoes
  • Shorts and T-shirts for hot days
  • Waterproofs for rainy days
  • Warm jacket for cold days
  • Sunglasses, hat and sun block cream
  • Four-season sleeping bag and sleeping mad
  • Good trekking boots
  • Towels and toiletry
  • Camera: still and video
  • River crossing sandals
  • Cash for most of the payment (credit cards are accepted only in some places)
